On June 20, two technicians from Great Lakes Fishery Commission were at the Mouth Park where the Sables River empties into the Spanish River in Massey collecting lamprey larvae samples in its ongoing efforts to identify and subsequently eliminate the sea lamprey, an invasive species.

Emma Verhuel, a summer student in biology from Carlton University along with her supervisor Trevor Plumley, work out of offices in Sault Ste Marie for the Federal Department of Fisheries. The pair are responsible for monitoring and collecting lamprey samples on the North Shore, Manitoulin Island and the southern most parts of Lake Superior.
