Fisheries and Oceans Canada has announced the reopening of fishing on most of the Miramichi River system because of improved water conditions after a spell of dangerously warm water.

However, three salmon pools will remain closed until Dec. 31 because of high temperatures, the department said.

The three closed salmon pools include waters along the northwest Miramichi River near Sutherland Brook, Southwest Miramichi River near Indiantown Brook and waters near Wilson Brook.

Tommi Linnansaari, professor in the forestry and environmental management department at the University of New Brunswick, said these three pools are known for being heavily populated with salmon.

Thirty salmon pools in the Miramichi River watershed were closed on July 30 because they were too warm.

Water temperatures were higher than 20 C for more than two consecutive nights in July, which forced a temporary ban on fishing in the pools.
