An Erie kayaker caught a fish of a lifetime and the experience ended with perfectly-timed fireworks.

Dan Morey, 46, a lifelong angler from Harborcreek Township, reeled in a 37-inch channel catfish July 2 while fishing on Lake Erie.

The heavy cat topped the scale at more than 27 pounds. He said the female was in a prespawn stage, making it heavier than at other times of the year.

Morey said the evening of July 2 was windy and waves at times would reach 3 feet. As a drift angler, he wasn’t able to fish that night as much as he'd have liked.
