In 2019, an endangered bluefin tuna weighing 278 kilograms was sold for £2.5 million at an auction in Tokyo. Last year, a bluefin tuna weighing 276 kilograms was bought by the same person, Kiyoshi Kimura. While on the surface it may look like the demand for tuna is consistent in Japan, a report in 2019 said the country has seen a huge depletion in the stock of bluefin tuna from seas. But large and rare tuna are not just limited to the land of Japan. Some spectacular ones are now available in other parts of the country as well.
