Angler breaks longstanding record with mahi mahi

A Maryland angler practicing for an upcoming fishing tournament caught a 72.8-pound mahi mahi off the coast of Ocean City, breaking the state record that had stood for 34 years.

Jeff Wright of Cambridge, Md., told the Maryland Department of Natural Resources that his fishing rod “went crazy” shortly after noon on Sunday, and within a half-hour he was looking at a state record for mahi mahi, also known as dolphinfish and dorado.

“It literally took 25 minutes to get this in,” Wright told DNR. “I had to play it until it finally gave up.”

An official from DNR certified the catch at Sunset Marina in Ocean City. The previous record was a 67.8-pound mahi mahi caught in July 1985 by Kim Lawson. The all-tackle record stands at 87 pounds caught in 1976 off Costa Rica.
