Fishing kids haul in succulent seafood from the deep as parents watch on

American author Max Hawthorne once said, “Take a kid fishing and you will capture their imagination.”

On Sunday, nearly 150 young children and teenagers, aged between three and 14 years old, accompanied by their parents, let their imaginations run free at the New Plymouth Sport Fishing and Underwater Club’s annual ‘Take a kid fishing day’ at Port Taranaki.
 

The free event saw parents and children enjoy two-hours dipping lines into the water off the lee breakwater jetties, and from boats in the harbour.

Club events and promotions manager Natasha McGlinchey​ said the annual event was well attended, with 145 youngsters taking part.
“Everyone got a prize and there were quite a few fish caught,” she said.

Ten-year-old Xander Laing​, of New Plymouth, landed the heaviest catch of the day with a 1.9kg John Dory, from the breakwater.
