Scientists recently discovered that zebrafish looked downward when swimming forward. The scientists found that the behaviour was an adaptive quirk that helps the fish stabilise its movements when swimming against the current.

Data from the brains of the zebrafish, its native environment, and behaviour was combined in a single computer model for the investigation. Within rivers, focusing on plants, other fish, or debris may be disorienting for the fish, which is why tracking the riverbed beneath allows the fish to better understand its direction and speed. While the zebrafish is a common model organism in laboratories, the study was conducted in its native environments in India
