For something so small, the northern anchovy can have a big impact on the California ecosystem and food chain. And apparently, the length of the food chain can have a big impact on the anchovy.

The 7-inch anchovy, considered a crucial food source for sea lions, dolphins, whales and tuna, can have population booms and busts lasting up to 10 years. Those ups and downs reverberate through the entire marine ecosystem, with busts sometimes contributing to starvation among sea lion pups or leading brown pelicans to abandon their chicks.
