VN Source: vietnam news 11/3/2010

Fishermen in the southern province of An Giang's Hau River, Mekong tributary, yesterday caught a 100-kg giant barb fish, the biggest yet seen in the region.

The fish is almost 1-metre-long and has a 1.2-metre-wide girth. Fishermen complained they could not carry the fish ashore.

The previous record-breaking giant barb fish weighed only 50-60kg in comparison.

Barb fish, one of the largest varieties of carp in the world, are found only in the Mae Klong, Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins.

The committee also impounded the traffickers' automobile, which was used to carry the orchids.

Many of the orchids fell within the 2B seriously protected rare plant species category.
