Why are goldfish in garden ponds threatening frogs?

Scientists have warned people not to release goldfish into their garden ponds because of the risk they pose a risk to frogs.

They are urging pond keepers to do everything they can to protect frogs from dying. But what exactly can we do to help?
What is ranavirosis?

The disease kills thousands of frogs every year. It causes systemic haemorrhaging and severe skin ulcers in amphibians.

It can result in a loss of limbs and death. It is thought to have entered the UK via the pet trade.
 



A study by the University of Exeter said that ranaviruses are a "global issue" and are causing mass amphibian deaths in North America, Europe and Asia, and has contributed to the global decline in amphibians.

It added that the disease has already implicated the declines of amphibian populations in Spain and the UK.
