How a 2-inch fish became more important than people

Maybe Jerry Brown was a little irascible this week. But I forgive him for saying that critics of his “water tunnel” plan need to “shut up.”

The California governor’s big hairy audacious goal is to build two tunnels, 40 feet wide and 30 miles long, under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, “the single most important link in the state’s water supply system,” according to the Association of California Water Agencies.
 

Indeed, the 7 million acre-feet of water the Delta provides each year supplies the Central Valley, the nation’s “greatest food resource,” as the New York Times put it, plus Southern California, which boasts the state’s biggest regional economy, and portions of the Bay Area.

The Delta also happens to be the habitat of a plethora of plant, mammal, fish, bird, amphibian, invertebrate and reptile “species of concern.”
