The vampire fish started crowding Michael Attard’s nets the year after COVID-19 hit.

They had been around for decades, lurking in the deeps, occasionally clinging to one of the many fish he landed as proprietor of Angler’s Edge Fishing Charters. But from 2021 to 2023, the parasitic sea lamprey seemed to be everywhere. Sometimes he’d pull a salmon or trout from Lake Ontario only to find two or three of the bloodsuckers attached to its body.

“We were getting huge numbers of them,” said Mr. Attard, who fishes out of Bluffer’s Park in Scarborough. “Clients would be blown away. Kids would get freaked out and run to the other end of the boat. They are a nasty fish.”
