Conservation celebrations: Why this tiny fish fingerling has scientists high-fiving

When the tiny fingerlings of Macquarie perch were discovered in a remote New South Wales waterway, there were some pretty excited gumboot-wearing scientists and anglers.

"There was lots of cheering, yahooing and high-fives," said Luke Pearce of the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries, who is working on the refuge project to save the endangered species.

"It was fantastic to finally find some juvenile Macquarie perch that have bred in the wild in this system from our stock population."

The discovery is the culmination of nearly a decade of work including the restocking of more than 19,000 fish in the hope they one day may live in abundance in the upland tributaries of the southern Murray Darling Basin as they did decades ago.

The Macquarie perch is now considered rare and endangered and the five remaining populations in New South Wales are under threat from the introduced redfin perch.

A scheme affectionately known as the 'Macca' project aims to create a new 'refuge' population of Macquarie perch in a safe location, in what Mr Pearce described as a sort of 'Noah's ark' to protect the species for the future.

Nine years ago, fish were taken from existing locations on the Abercrombie River and then bred in captivity at the DPI's Narrandera Fisheries Centre using a new breeding technique of an artificial spawning stream.
