AI fish counting app lands innovation award
A machine learning application that allows aquaculture operators to use their smartphones to count fish in real-time has been selected to receive an innovation award at the annual tech event CES 2025.
The app is the result of a collaboration utilising the computer graphics simulation technology of Softbank - a Japanese tech firm - and the AI technology of Aizip - a US-based AI specialist. Whilst small and low-power, the app can still count fish underwater with up to 95 percent accuracy.

Real-time data capture and analysis on smartphones is becoming increasingly important within industries such as aquaculture. Through this joint research programme, the possibilities of using AI applications in a marine environment and for improvements in efficiency for the aquaculture industry are clear. By making use of low-power machine learning applications, the opportunities for using smartphones in environments without networks, such as the open ocean, can be expanded.
