The government of Canada is investing CAD 2 million (USD 1.4 million, EUR 1.3 million) to support the recently reopened redfish fishery in the Atlantic Ocean.
Under the investment, ACPG Innovation – a nonprofit organization affiliated with fisher representative group Association des Capitaines Propriétaires de la Gaspésie – will act as a third-party redistributor of funding, providing money to companies that want to acquire fishing gear, increase fishing efficiency, modify their vessels, or improve fish handling and processing. |

The Quebec government will also contribute funding, bringing the total investment to nearly CAD 2.8 million (USD 1.9 million, EUR 1.9 million), covering nearly the entire cost of the CAD 3.1 million (USD 2.2 million, EUR 2.1 million) project. |

Canada and the U.S. worked together to stamp out the invasive sea lamprey in the Great Lakes |

The vampire fish started crowding Michael Attard’s nets the year after COVID-19 hit.
They had been around for decades, lurking in the deeps, occasionally clinging to one of the many fish he landed as proprietor of Angler’s Edge Fishing Charters. But from 2021 to 2023, the parasitic sea lamprey seemed to be everywhere. Sometimes he’d pull a salmon or trout from Lake Ontario only to find two or three of the bloodsuckers attached to its body. |

|
“We were getting huge numbers of them,” said Mr. Attard, who fishes out of Bluffer’s Park in Scarborough. “Clients would be blown away. Kids would get freaked out and run to the other end of the boat. They are a nasty fish.” |
